Sanford-Fritch Eagles open district play against the Tulia Hornets

After going through a tough non-district schedule, the Sanford-Fritch Eagles are getting to push the reset button on the season by starting District 1-2A play on Friday on the road against the Tulia Hornets. The Eagles enter district play as the defending champions where they won the crown by going undefeated in their six district games last season. But in order to defend their title, the Eagles will need to tighten up their defense that has given up an average of 38 points per game in the team’s four non-district losses. The good news for the Eagles defense this week is they are taking on a Hornets team that holds a 1-3 record and is struggling offensively, by averaging just 10 points per game. The Hornets will try to spread the field led by junior quarterback Ross Keeter who will try to get ball into the hands of Joe Aguayo and John Martinez. On the other side of the ball, the Eagles’ offense should have the opportunity to get on a roll against a Hornet’s defense that is giving up over 20 point per game.Dimmitt and Spearman are off to great starts to the 2011 season which should make the race for the district crown a challenge this season. But if the Eagles can stay healthy and put the non-district schedule behind them, the Eagles should have a great opportunity to repeat as the district champs.Kickoff between the Eagles and Hornets is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
