Lady Hornets sting the Lady Bulldogs 44-41

On Tuesday evening, the Borger Lady Bulldogs appeared to be on their way to snapping a losing streak by leading throughout their game with the Amarillo Highland Park Lady Hornets up until the 26 second mark of the third period.But the breaks in the final nine minutes of the game would not go the Lady Bulldogs way, leading to the Lady Hornets escaping Tex Hanna Gym with a 44-41 win.The Lady Bulldogs opened the game strong by building a 10-2 lead by the 5:00 mark of the first period.Borger sophomore McKenzie Loftis led the quick start for the Lady Bulldogs by scoring six points and coming up with three steals in the first period.The Lady Bulldogs defense did a solid job in the first period with all of the Lady Hornets six first period points coming from the free throw line.In the second period, neither team could get much going offensively until the final two minutes of the first half when a tip in and a three pointer pulled the Lady Hornets to within two points, 17-15.But, the Lady Bulldogs extended their lead to seven points by halftime thanks to freshman Tiffanie Prater converting an old fashioned three point play, followed by senior Holly Jones turning a steal into a lay up.Twice in the third period, the Lady Bulldogs extended their lead to eight points. However, the tide of the game started to change when the Lady Hornets ended the third period on a 10-2 run to take a 31-30 lead going into the fourth period.At the 3:25 mark of the fourth period, the Lady Hornets held a four point lead.But the Lady Bulldogs rallied and were able to take back a two point lead, 41-39, when Loftis scored on a lay up with 1:20 left in the game.On their ensuing possession, the Lady Hornets took their time before taking a shot and it paid off with Highland Park nailing a three pointer with 40 seconds left to take back a one point lead, 42-41.Three times in the final 40 seconds, the Lady Bulldog took good shots to try to take back the lead or tie the game to force overtime.
