Lady Dawgs beat Perryton, clinch playoff berth

PERRYTON-The ending wasn’t pretty, but the Borger Lady Bulldogs were able to hang on for a 9-8 win over the Perryton Rangerettes on Friday afternoon, which allowed the team to clinch a playoff berth and avoid having to be involved in a potential playoff tournament.Going into Friday’s contest, Borger and Dalhart held a one-game lead over Perryton in the district standings. If Perryton was able to defeat the Lady Bulldogs, along with a Dalhart loss to Pampa, the three teams would of found themselves having to take part in some kind of playoff for the playoffs. However, thanks to the Lady Bulldogs taking care of business no such scenario was needed. The Lady Bulldogs jumped onto the scoreboard in the top of the first inning when two Perryton errors helped allow Tootie Karins and Traysha Walker cross home plate to give Borger a 2-0 lead. The rest of the first four innings became a defensive battle with Taylor Hickman for the Lady Bulldogs and Stacy Johnson for Perryton doing good jobs on the mound. In the top of the fifth inning, senior Joanne Jones reached base on a lead-off bunt followed by senior Lyndsey Barrow bringing Jones in to score on a RBI triple. Before the Lady Bulldogs were done at the plate, Lexi Fleming would bring in Barrow on a fielder’s choice to first base, giving Borger a 4-0 lead.Perryton finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning by using three singles and an error to make it a 4-2 score.Fortunately, the Lady Bulldogs were able to respond to the Rangerettes by putting up another five runs in the sixth and seventh innings, that included a RBI double by Barrow and two RBIs for Fleming, thanks to a Rangerette error. With the score 9-3 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, Lady Bulldog fans were feeling pretty good about getting the win. However, it didn’t take too long for that feeling to change. Two errors and three Rangerette singles allowed the Perryton to bring in two runs with no outs. The Lady Bulldogs finally got a break by taking advantage of poor Rangerette base running into a 9-3-6 double play. However the bleeding didn’t quite stop there, as two more Lady Bulldog errors and a triple brought in three more runs to make it a 9-8 game.At this point the momentum was definitely on Perryton’s side. However, the Lady Bulldogs were able to be the team to leave the field with a win. Senior Brittany Thomas came up with the catch in centerfield for the third out of the inning. With the win, the Lady Bulldogs wrap up the regular season with a 17-17 overall record and a 4-5 mark in District 1-3A play.Borger’s bi-district playoff date and opponent had yet to be determined by press time on Saturday morning.Lady Bulldog top hitters: Lyndsey Barrow 2/4 1 3B 1 2B 2 RBI’s; Lexi Fleming 2/3 3 RBI’s; Brittany Thomas 2/3On the Mound: Taylor Hickman 6 innings 9 hits 3 BB’s 2 K’s 5 earned runs; Traysha Walker 1 inning 2 hits 1 earned run.Borger 200 023 2 9 9 6Perryton 000 021 5 8 12 5
