Girls hoops teams see mixed results in tournament play

On the second day of the Amarillo River Road Tournament, the Sanford-Fritch Lady Eagles split their two games and the Borger Lady Bulldogs lost to Amarillo River Road.As a result, Sanford-Fritch and Borger will meet on Saturday in the final day of the tournament.Sanford-Fritch 48 Randall JV 24In the opening game on Friday, the Lady Eagles led from the opening tip off against the Randall JV Lady Raiders winning, 48-24.The Lady Eagles opened the first period taking a quick 8-0 lead with four points scored by senior Mariah Cumings, a rebound tip in by Summer Tubbs and a lay up by Christa White.Randall fought back to pull back to within two points, 9-7, by the end of the first period.However, the Lady Eagles responded by building back a seven point lead by halftime.The Lady Eagles started to pull away in the third period by opening the second half with a 15-0 run.Tubbs led the Lady Eagles by scoring 14 points and grabbing five rebounds.White had 13 points and seven rebounds, while Cumings had 10 points along with four steals.Amarillo River Road 55 Borger 42Turnovers and poor shooting are not a good combination in the game of basketball.Unfortunately, the combo plagued the Lady Bulldogs in their loss against the River Road Lady Cats 55-42.The Lady Bulldogs committed 17 first half turnovers while connecting on 5/17 shots to find themselves down 15-22 at halftime.The Lady Bulldog rallied in the third period led by baskets by Tiffanie Prater and Nellie Embers to pull to within four points, 22-26.Throughout the third period, the Lady Bulldogs stayed within striking distance until a three point and four technical free throws helped River Road build a 26-40 lead going into the fourth period.At the 3:30 mark of the four period, the Lady Bulldogs pulled back to within seven points, 37-46.But the comeback wasn’t meant to be with the Lady Cats finishing the game outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 9-4 to hang on for the win.Embers led the Bulldogs in scoring with 15 points, followed by Emma Wood and Prater each scoring six points.Dumas 43 Sanford-Fritch 36The Lady Eagles matched up well with the Lady Demons through four periods on Friday afternoon. However, 20 turnovers and 31% shooting proved more than the Lady Eagles could overcome with Dumas getting the 43-36 win.Tubbs had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Eagles, followed by Mikala Setliff and White each scoring seven points.
