Former first lady Nancy Reagan passed away Sunday at her home in Los Angeles, according to a family spokesperson. The former film actress whose crowning role was that of vigilant guardian of her husband's interests and legacy was 94. The cause was congestive heart failure, her office said. As first lady from 1981 to 1989, Mrs. Reagan had a profound influence on one of the most popular presidents in modern history.

President Obama said Sunday that Mrs. Reagan had "redefined" the role of first lady, and he praised her for becoming an advocate for Alzheimer's disease treatments and research after her husband was diagnosed in 1994. She will be laid to rest in California next to her late husband at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley.
