Eagles look to stay perfect in district play against Dimmitt

On Friday night, the Sanford-Fritch Eagles will attempt to take their season record to 4-4 and their District 1-2A Division II mark to 4-0 when they host the Dimmitt Bobcats.Through district play, the Eagles have had no difficulty finding the end zone, averaging 38 points over the past three games while only allowing 15 points a game over the same stretch. In last week’s win over Amarillo Highland Park, the Eagles defense dominated the Hornets offense by causing three turnovers and limiting the Hornets to 150 yards of total offense.Ryan Blakely and Terry Bryan were responsible for coming up with two of the Hornet turnovers, but were able to be big contributors in the Eagles passing game at receiver, with the two combining for 74 yards receiving and two touchdowns.Sanford-Fritch will start an interesting district stretch with games against Abernathy, Spearman and Dimmitt still to be played. All four teams appear to be the forerunners for the district’s three playoff spots. Dimmitt enters Friday opening district with losses to Abernathy and Spearman, making tomorrow’s game a must win for the Bobcats. After enduring a long search for a new head coach in the spring, the Bobcats have put together a solid 2011 campaign with a 3-3 record. The Bobcats aren’t a very big team, but have a group of solid quick playmakers led by quarterback Diego Rivera and tight end Andres Rodriguez.Despite the Bobcats being an improved team, the Eagles should be able to put themselves in position to get the win at home and set up a big showdown with Abernathy next week. But with the Bobcats fighting for their playoff lives, the Eagles will need to be prepared to see Dimmitt giving them all they have in order to try to come away with the upset.Kickoff between Dimmitt and Sanford-Fritch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Fritch.
