Texas Tech head basketball coach Tubby Smith left the Red Raiders to take the same position with the University of Memphis. The 64-year-old Smith, fresh off a successful 19-13 season with the Red Raiders where they earned an NCAA bid, replaces Josh Pastner who left for Georgia Tech.

Smith won a national title with Kentucky in 1998. He also worked at Tulsa, Georgia and Minnesota prior to coaching Texas Tech and is one of only two coaches to lead five different schools to the NCAA tournament. Memphis lured Smith away from Texas Tech with a five-year contract for $15.45 million, including $2.8 million next season, $2.9 million for 2017-18 and $3.25 million each of the last three seasons.
