Borger’s bid for the state tournament comes up short

After an impressive opening round score of 319 on Wednesday, the Borger boys varsity golf team came into the final round of play in the 3A Region I Golf Tournament at the Meadowbrook Golf Course in Lubbock looking for another good round to maintain the lead they held after round one to earn a trip to the 3A State Tournament. The Bulldogs would shoot a solid 322 to take their two round total to 319-322-641. Unfortunately for Borger, the team’s district foes from Perryton picked the second day of the regional tournament to have the round of their lives by shooting a tournament low 310 to finish in first place with a score of 328-310-638. Borger had defeated the Rangers by over 40 strokes in the District 1-3A Tournament. With Perryton having the hot round, the final team spot for the state tournament would come down between Borger and Andrews where the Mustangs would shoot a second round 315 for a two round total of 324-315-639 to take second place. Borger was left just on the outside looking in for a state berth by taking third place in a tournament that featured six of the state’s top ten 3A golf teams. All news for Borger wasn’t bad on Thursday, as senior Will Paulsell battled back with a second round score of 73 to take his tournament total to 78-73-151 to earn a trip to the state tournament after winning a playoff over Blake Brorman of Big Spring.Paulsell opened the playoff by sending his drive off the first tee into a water hazard, and he finished the hole with a double bogey. But Brorman, who was on the green in four shots, was unable to make him pay, missing a short putt that would have extended the match. That proved to be the final twist in what was an entertaining and closely contested tournament from the beginning. The top two teams and the top two individual golfers not on a qualifying team advanced to the state tournament.Region I-3A golf tournament at Meadowbrook Golf Course, LubbockTeams — 1.
