BHS hires new principal

Borger High School will officially have a new principal at the start of the new school year.After a closed session Thursday evening, the Borger ISD board of trustees voted to approve David S. Tyson of Kerens as the new principal to replace Tony McCarthy. McCarthy will be taking an administrative position within the district.Tyson will be coming to BHS from his position as principal at Kerens High School in Kerens, where he has served from 2006 until the present time. At KHS, he was responsible for the performance of all management of daily operations of the school, including students, teachers, staff, and facilities, and the development of curriculum standards and performance standards/goals through the implementation of clear, objective guidelines for teachers and classroom observation and review of instructional materials.He was also responsible for teacher recruitment and active participation in the hiring and evaluation of teachers and staff, and set the academic tone for the school through the development and implementation of programs, training and motivation of teachers and staff, and establishment and execution of policies and procedures.He prepared reporting on various subjects, including finances and the budget, attendance, requisition/allocation of supplies, etc., and assisted in student discipline and administrative duties at extracurricular school events in accordance with district guidelines and policies.Tyson was responsible for ensuring that all federal, state, and local policies/requirements are met, and led the high school to a status of “Recognized” campus.Prior to his employment with KHS, Tyson was assistant principal at Mount Pleasant High School from 2001-06. He was responsible for the supervision and direction of the math, science, social studies, and E.S.L. departments, including curriculum and development, as well as implementation of policies and programs.He was charged with the preparation of students, staff, and facilities for all academic testing, and reviewed and evaluated all current academic textbooks in circulation at the school and examined/analyzed all future textbook adoption and purchases.While at Mount Pleasant, Tyson supervised and supported all UIL, AP, and G/T programs through planning and program development/revision, and tasked with the creation, revision, and implementation of all disaster drills, procedures, and protocols for facilities, students, and staff.He also was accountable for the supervision, direction, and guidance of all substitute teachers currently in rotation at the high school campus, prepared and maintained all attendance records and reports, assisted with student discipline in accordance with district policies and procedures, and was a frequent contributor to a newsletter to communicate school events and news.Prior to his time with Mount Pleasant, Tyson worked as a teacher and administrator for Pleasant Grove ISD in Texarkana as a teacher/administrator for the high school from 1988-2001.He taught Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Geometry Pre-AP, Pre-Calculus, and Biology; served as a sponsor for the UIL academic teams and events, including leading the UIL Number Sense Team for the school; served as a sponsor for student-led extracurricular clubs and events, including one of the largest and most active student clubs on campus; and functioned as a bus driver for the Pleasant Grove ISD.He also worked as a teacher at the high school for Liberty-Eylau ISD in Texarkana from 1985-88, where he taught Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Consumer Economics, and Consumer Math; and functioned as a bus driver for the school district.Tyson worked in pharmaceutical sales for MeadJohnson from 1984-85, serving the areas of northeast Texas, southwest Arkansas, and southeast Oklahoma.
