Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument hosts Flintfest 2017 Sept. 16

Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument announced Flintfest 2017 will be Saturday, September 16. The daylong festivities begin at 9:00 a.m. and continues through 4:30 p.m. Activities include flintkapping demonstrations using many of the same techniques once used by native Americans.

Park rangers will lead walking tours starting at 9:00 a.m. along the Antelope Creek Peoples Ruins. The Alibates Flint Quarries Tour will be offered at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Tours are limited to 25 people so reserve your spot(s) at the Alibates Visitor Center front desk. From noon to 2:00 p.m. guests can learn about the atlatal, an ancient weapon, then compete in the Flintfest 2017 atlatal contest.

The Alibates Theater will feature an 11:00 a.m. presentation by Dr. Paul Kate on the Antelope Creek Culture. At 1:30 p.m., a park ranger lead presentation will feature "Paleo Life" 13,00 years ago in the Texas Panhandle. The final presentation begins at 3:30 p.m. with a discussion on the geology of the Alibates area.
