2011-12 Borger News Herald Female Athlete of the Year

West Texas High senior Abby Summers was selected as the 2011-12 Borger News Herald’s Female Athlete of the Year due to academic and athletic success in volleyball, basketball, softball, tennis and cheerleading during her senior year.Competing in sports has always been a big part of Summer’s life, with the senior commenting, “Due to having a dad who is a coach, I have always been busy playing sports or having him working with me to get better.”Just like many small school student athletes, Summers spent her high school days trying to balance her responsibilities in the classroom, personal life and extracurricular activities. While the balancing act was tiring at times, Summers sees it just as a way of life, saying, “I never considered it a big challenge having to adapt or find time to get things done because I really had no choice. When it came down to finding time to study, my thought was always that is what the bus rides are for.” As far as her favorite sport to compete in, Summer is quick to say volleyball is her favorite saying it’s just different than the other sports and is her strongest. In volleyball, Summers did a good job setting up the Lady Comanches offense, averaging 22.7 assists and over two serving aces per match. Despite only working with her for one season, Summers says Lady Comanches Head Volleyball Coach Kathleen Patterson really helped her become a better volleyball player. Summers’ senior year includes playing shortstop for the softball team, where she had a .422 batting average with three doubles and 23 RBIs and competing on the Lady Comanches basketball team.In tennis, Summers qualified for the 1A Region I Tournament by winning the district championship in Girls Doubles playing with her sister Erin Summers. With all the success Summers saw as an athlete at West Texas High, winning the district title with her sister Erin Summers against a good Canadian team, will go down as one of her favorite memories this year. While Summers doesn’t have plans to compete in sports at the collegiate level, she plans to have fun competing in intramural sports while attending West Texas A&M University in Canyon. ****Male and Female Athlete of the Year selections are made by a panel not affiliated with the Borger News Herald, Borger ISD, Sanford-Fritch ISD, or Plemons-Stinnett-Phillips Consolidated ISD.
