Merkel- Charles “Herby” Simmons, 90, is dancing to his heart’s content, having passed away October 24, 2012 in Temple after a long battle with Alzheimer’. Graveside services will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday, October 27th at Rose Hill Cemetery in Merkel with Reverend David Cason officiating, directed by Starbuck Funeral Home.
Raised in Peacock, Texas, Herby served in the Army Air Force during World War II, flying 14 combat missions as a top turret gunner. He then moved to Borger, Texas where he worked for Phillips 66 at the copolymer rubber plant for 36 years. After retirement, Herby and Virginia relocated to Merkel.
He is survived and cherished by his son, Charlie, three granddaughters, one grandson, and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his close friend and companion, Billie Lawson of Abilene.
Herby was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Virginia and his daughter, Clara “Cookie” Martin.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of the Veteran’s Hospital Hospice Unit in Temple, Texas for the unbelievable care they provided at the end of his life.
