The Borger Lady Bulldogs hosted the Pampa Lady Harvesters on Tuesday night with revenge on their minds. The previous district matchup between these two teams went to five sets with the Lady Dogs falling short. It was a hard-fought battle, but the Lady Harvesters pulled out the win in four sets, 25-17, 25-19, 18-25, 25-23. The ladies fall to 2-4 in district play with two games to go.
The first set started out strong for Borger as they went up 3-0 quickly. Haley Armstrong had the first kill for the Lady Dogs followed by two more kills from Katie Ammerman that were nicely set up by Nicole McMurry. Kaylee Purcell had a nice block at the net, but Borger let Pampa back into this one tied at 7. Armstrong, Maggie McMurry, and Stephanie Soto all had great defensive digs, and Armstrong killed it again. Despite two kills from Emma Wood, a block from Purcell and Nellie Embers, and an ace from Blaine Hill, the ladies were down 15-19. Tootie Karins made some nice digs, but Borger could not climb back in this one and lost 17-25.
Set two started out with two Wood kills, but after errors, the Lady Dogs were down 4-7. N. McMurry set up Purcell for a nice kill, followed by Armstrong and Wood kills respectively. M. McMurry played great defensively, and Wood had a block at the net, but the ladies were down by 6. Despite two more kills from Armstrong and one from Ammerman, they fell 19-25.
Set three was full of action from the start. Embers set up a kill for Ammerman and then N. McMurry set up a kill for Embers, Armstrong, and Ammerman. The game was tied up at 6 all. Purcell had a nice kill, and six different ladies for Borger had digs to keep the ball alive during some long volleys. After a Wood kill and an ace from M. McMurry, the ladies were up by two and had the momentum. Wood had another kill, M. McMurry another ace, and Pampa hit it out of bounds to make the score 15-10 Borger. Pampa closed the gap to within two, but Embers had three kills to keep them at bay. Ammerman and Purcell added a couple of kills of their own, and the Lady Dogs prevail 25-18.
The ladies needed to win set four to stay alive in this match. Things started out nicely with monster kills from Armstrong and Wood. Embers had a great block at the net to put the ladies up 4-0. Purcell had two kills in a row set up by N. McMurry, and M. McMurry, Karins, and Soto all had great defensive plays for Borger. After an Ammerman kill, the ladies found themselves down 13-16. A kill from Embers and a block from Wood and Armstrong fired the ladies up, and they were down by two. N. McMurry had an ace to pull the ladies within one, but even after a monster kill from Armstrong, the Lady Dogs lose a heartbreaker, 23-25.
One thing that I love about this team is that they truly play as a team. In the first set, eight different girls had defensive digs for Borger and four different girls had blocks throughout the match. Every girl does her part and then some. They are fun to watch, win or lose.
Leading the team in kills against Pampa was Armstrong with 12, followed closely by Wood with 11. N. McMurry makes those kills happen with her assists, of which she had 32, and Embers had a couple of her own. M. McMurry had two aces, and Hill and N. McMurry each had one. Wood finished with 4 blocks, followed by Purcell and Embers with 3 a piece. M. McMurry led in digs with 23 and Karins finished with 12 for the Lady Dogs.
Borger will travel to Perryton on Saturday, October 20th for their next district matchup. JV and 9th grade will start at 10:00am followed by the Varsity who has already beat Perryton this year. Next Tuesday will be the last district game against River Road and Senior Night in which the eight lovely senior ladies will be recognized. That game will start with JV and 9th at 5pm. Come out and support your Lady Dogs!
