On Friday evening, Borger’s Max Lusk will receive the Joe Frank Wheeler Scholarship in a ceremony prior to the Amarillo Sox baseball game against the Gary SouthShore Railcats.
Lusk is a 2012 graduate of Borger High School, where he earned District 1-3A All-District honors as part of the Borger Bulldog baseball and football teams.
Two area student-athletes have been selected to receive the Joe Frank Wheeler Scholarship based on a number of criteria, including leadership among peers, influence in the community, and performance on the athletic field and in the classroom. The amount of the scholarships are worth $1,000.
Amarillo Sox Vice President/General Manager Mark Lee established the scholarships to honor Joe Frank Wheeler for one local baseball player and one local softball player who will be attending college and continuing to play on the field after high school.
Prior to his death in 2009, Wheeler had served as the PA Announcer for the Amarillo Dillas for over 10 years.
Prior to his time working and living in Amarillo, Wheeler and his family were an active part of the Borger community. Wheeler served as the president of the Borger Chamber of Commerce from 1989-2001, worked for Edward Jones, and was on KQTY radio as the voice of Borger Bulldog and Lady Bulldog athletics for many years prior to relocating to Amarillo.
The first pitch on Friday evening is scheduled to take place at 7:05 p.m. with the Joe Frank Wheeler scholarship ceremony expected to take place at around 6:45 p.m.
