On Thursday, Frank Phillips College Plainsmen Head Basketball Coach Chris Hackett announced the signing of four players to his roster for the 2012-13 season.
Hackett will enter the fall with the luxury of having seven players returning from last year’s squad. Each of the seven contributed greatly to the team, but of the seven, Demetris LaFontant and Alex Zivkovic are the only ones returning with post experience in the paint.
Hopefully, the announced signings by Hackett will provide depth under the basket with the signing of 6-9 Juri Todorovic, 6-7 Ke’Andre Stanton, and 6-7 Reger Baker.
Baker comes to FPC from Miami, Fla. and should give the Plainsmen a good defensive presence inside. Hackett commented, “Reger has a big, strong body who will be a force in the paint. He is a true center with good low post moves and is a good rebounder and shot blocker.”
Stanton is from Lynn, Md. and will give the Plainsmen an athletic big man who can run the floor and finish around the basket. Hackett said Stanton also has the ability to step out and shoot the jumpshot making him a duel threat inside and out.
Todorovic will arrive from The Netherlands. Hackett describes him as a very skilled big man. Hackett said, “As well as being able to score inside, Juri can also handle the ball, make good passes, and knock down the outside shot.”
Hackett also added depth at guard by signing Greg Monday, 5-10, who played high school ball at Robert E. Lee in San Antonio. Hackett describes Monday as a true point guard with a high basketball IQ who can see the floor and make good passes. Monday also handles the ball well and is a tough defender because of his quickness.
By signing the four players Hackett feels he addressed two key areas on his team, saying, “Our two main priorities were to increase our depth at the point guard position and to add some size in the front court. I feel really good about the four players we have signed and I think we have definitely addressed our immediate needs.”
