West Texas High Comanche Senior Colin Coleman will set his sights on medaling this weekend, in the State Track Meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium at the University of Texas at Austin. Coleman has been sitting among the area’s best on the Amarillo Globe News Track Honor Roll for most of the track season. Colin is a long jumper for the Comanches, and he was also a running back on the varsity football team.
Coleman began his journey to Austin at the District meet with a first place finish with a jump of 21.6 1/2 feet. In class A, there is an extra step that must be taken to get to the Regional Track Meet. There is an Area Meet to contend with. Colin met the next challenge with a gold medal finish and a jump of 21.7 feet. After that, he participated in the Regional Qualifiers meet and jumped 22.4 for a third place finish. This is just a practice meet for those qualifying for Regionals.
Finally, Colin was ready for the big Regional Track Meet in Levelland and see if he could out jump the best in the region and qualify for a trip to Austin. Getting there wasn’t easy. Coleman came down to a final jump at one point during the meet or he was done. He had scratched on the previous two jumps. His coach moved him back a couple of inches at the start of his jump, and that took care of the problem. He placed second with a jump of 21.7 feet and that jump was good enough to earn him a trip to Austin at the State Track Meet.
Good luck to Colin as he finishes his Comanche athletic career May 11-12 in Austin this weekend.
