After a disappointing game one in Lubbock, West Texas High was trying to rebound in game two in Canyon Monday night. It just didn’t seem to be in the cards for the Lady Comanches this year. Trailing 8-4 after four innings, and still very much in the ballgame, catcher Abby Rios broke her pinky finger warming up between innings, and was out. Then, in the fifth inning, right fielder Taylor Kirksey, injured her ankle sliding into second and left the game. Things fell apart from there, and they lost the game 13-6.
Sundown got on the scoreboard in the first inning with a three run homer. Rios got on board with a base hit down third base line but she was left on base and the score was 3-0 after one. The Lady Roughnecks added two more runs in the top of the second.
West Texas got on the board in the bottom of the second after Kirksey had a solid hit to center. Cheyenne Tull got the RBI on a hard hit ground ball over second base, and Kirksey came in. Tull was left stranded and the Lady Comanches trailed 4-1 after two.
A couple of base hits and a walk gave Sundown three more runs in the top of the third and the Lady Comanches went three up and three down in the bottom of the inning. The score was 8-1 after three.
Sundown led off with a double to the left field fence. After a walk gave the Lady Roughnecks runners on first and second, Rios gunned down the base runner attempting to steal third. On the very next play, she threw out the second runner in a replay of the out before. Erin Summers fanned the next hitter to retire the side. Kirksey was on with a base hit, and Natalie Franklin followed her on base after the second baseman bobbled the ball. Tull banged out an RBI double into deep in center field. Abby Summers was next with a 2 RBI double in the same area. The Lady Comanches left two on when the inning was over. The game score was now a manageable 8-4 after four.
Rios left the game with the finger injury warming up for the fifth inning. The fifth inning was disastrous for the Lady Comanches. Three errors, three hit battes, and two walks gave Sundown opportunity for more scoring and they took advantage with five runs. With the bases loaded, Erin Summers field an infield grounder and threw to home to end the inning. Sarah Kelly go a hard hit single to left and Kirksey got an RBI when she got on with a throwing error to first base. Natalie Franklin got a single. Tull hit an RBI sacrifice fly to deep center and out number two. After five innings, WT trailed 13-6.
The Lady Comanche infield took care of business in the sixth and no runs scored for Sundown. Devin DeLapp and Erin Summers both had singles for West Texas, but neither scored and the score remained 13-6 after six. Two ground balls to Abby Summers at short and throw to first retired two hitters, and sister Erin struck out the third hiter. One last chance for WT. Rebecca Wallace walked to give the Lady Tribe some hope, but the next two hitters didn’t get the ball out of the infield.
