LITTLEFIELD-On Saturday, the second inning of both games in the best-of-three 3A Bi-District Playoff series between the Borger Lady Bulldogs and the Lamesa Golden Tornadoes proved to be the deciding factors in Lamesa’s two game sweep 11-3 and 8-0, in Littlefield.
The Lady Bulldogs end the 2012 season with a 17-15 overall record, while Lamesa advances to the Area Playoff Round to take on Pecos.
Game One: Lamesa 11 Borger 3
Game one started on a positive note for the Lady Bulldogs with Katie Ammerman bringing in Taylor Hickman for the game’s first run on a RBI single in the top of the first inning.
Lamesa answered back by scoring a run on a RBI single in the bottom half of the first inning, before breaking the game wide open by scoring eight runs in the second inning.
Lamesa opened the bottom of the second inning by hitting back-to-back doubles. Lamesa came up with another single but was able to clear the bases for three runs, due to two throwing errors by the Lady Bulldogs.
Before the Lady Bulldogs could get off the field, Lamesa came away with four more hits and four more runs to build a 1-9 lead.
After Lamesa added another run in the third inning, the Lady Bulldogs were able to get back on the scoreboard in the fourth and fifth innings on RBI hits by Tootie Karins and Kyla Baker to bring in Payden Dompe and Desiree Jiminez. But the two runs were not enough to spark a late inning rally for the Lady Bulldogs.
Lamesa’s sophomore pitcher Makayla Hunter did a great job in the pitcher’s circle by striking out 15 batters, giving up just six hits.
Game Two: Lamesa 8 Borger 0
Outside of Lamesa scoring six runs in the second inning, game two proved to be a competitive contest. But despite having runners in scoring position six times, the Lady Bulldogs would fall victim to a shutout due to solid defense and pitching by Lamesa.
The second inning started with the Lady Bulldogs committing three errors, which led to two runs by Lamesa. Before the inning was over, Lamesa brought in four more runs off two fielder’s choice hits and a double to take a 0-6 lead.
From the third inning to the sixth inning, the Lady Bulldogs were able to get two runners on base and threaten to get back into the game. But the breaks just fell Lamesa’s way on Saturday as infield pop-ups, timely strikeouts and a good double play kept the Bulldogs scoreless while Lamesa cruised to the series sweep.
The Lady Bulldogs lose three key seniors in Lauren Hernandez, Dakota Karins, and Alex Lopez. But with a solid nucleus set to return, the Lady Bulldogs should be able to bounce back in 2013 ready to make a run at the district title and the playoffs.
