Game One: Western Texas College 9 Frank Phillips College 5
Normally taking frustration out by throwing or hitting things in the dugout is seen as an act of bad sportsmanship in baseball. But with the way game one ended between Western Texas and Frank Phillips, most fans would of understood if a Plainsmen player or two took our their frustration out on a water cooler or two.
The Plainsmen appeared to on their way to a big win by holding a 5-1 lead in the top of the seventh inning. But that one half of an inning displayed some bizarre events which helped lead to Western Texas scoring eight runs with two outs in their 9-5 win.
The game started well for the Plainsmen as they took advantage of timely hitting and Westerners’ errors to score five runs in the first six innings.
A walk and strikeout began the top of the seventh inning, but as the inning progressed players and coaches on both sides started to show some frustration on the balls and strikes being called at home plate.
Another walk and a bunt down the third base line, led to Western Texas loading the bases with one out. But it would be during the next at bat is when the game turned unfortunately not in the Plainsmen’ favor.
With a 2-2 count, Plainsmen pitcher Brad Wieck got his pitch over the inside court of the plate for what appeared to be strike three. However the pitch would be called a ball leading to some frustration to start showing from the Plainsmen on the field and dugout. On the next pitch, the ball appeared to land just outside of the plate, but the umpire signaled strike three giving the Plainsmen the second out of the inning.
The outside strike call led to a very heated argument with profanity between the Western Texas Coach and the umpire, where an ejection for the Westerners coach appeared to be a sure thing. However the coach was allowed to stay in the game, while the argument appeared to rattle the home plate umpire over the next couple of batters.
After the heated confrontation, the game started to slip away from the Plainsmen as four straight balls allowed the Westerners to score a run followed by the Plainsmen continuing to not get the calls at the plate, as another walk scored another Westerners run to make it 5-3.
Before the Plainsmen could get off the field, the Westerners had four straight hits, including a three-run triple and a two-run home run, to take a 5-9 lead and eventually get the win.
