On Saturday morning, the Borger Lady Bulldogs Softball team (17-14) will begin its best of three 3A Bi-District playoff series against the Lamesa Golden Tornadoes in Littlefield.
The Lady Bulldogs, after posting a 15-7 non-district record, were poised to make a run for the District 1-3A title. However, the Lady Bulldogs had to make their road to the playoffs dramatic by dropping their first four district games and needed a strong finish to clinch the final district playoff berth over Dalhart.
On the difference between the start and end of district play, Borger Head Softball Coach Steve Watkins said it wasn’t about adjustments from the team but more about staying focused and playing hard. Watkins said, “The team really made no adjustments, they just kept grinding and working hard and got it done. I am very proud of them, because they showed a lot of character by not giving up.”
Clinching a playoff berth in the final week is nothing new to the Lady Bulldogs, as the team faced a similar scenario last season.
Last season, the Lady Bulldogs were able to carry the momentum of ending the regular season strong with them into the playoffs by beating Levelland in the Bi-District Round, before falling to a good Andrews team in the Area Round.
The playoff experience has seemed to help this year’s squad prepare for the post-season, with Watkins saying, “Now that we have ‘been there and done that’ so to speak, the girls know what it takes to be successful, hard practices. We were a little wide-eyed last year, but they seem to have a little more confidence going into this year’s post-season.”
Watkins went on to say he feels confident about his team’s chance to win the series with Lamesa, but knows his team will have to come out ready to play. Watkins said, “Like I told the girls, once you make it to the post season, everyone is good, it boils down to who plays consistent.”
The first game of the series will begin at 10:00 a.m. followed by game two starting around noon. If game three is necessary, it will be played on Monday at 6:00 p.m. in Littlefield.
