West Texas High had two games left on their District schedule on Saturday and they needed just one win out of the two for a playoff spot. They did it, at Claude, in a close one 8-7. The Tribe did an exceptional job defensively, with a double play, and individual effort by all to just keep the ball in front of them. Jess Shields got the win, pitching 5.2 innings, and Carlos Juarez threw the last 1.1 innings. Shields struck out 2 and walked 4, Juarez struck out 2 and walked none.
West Texas took the lead after one inning 1-0. Neither team scored in the second. The Tribe got two more runs in the top of the third, but Claude scored four to take the lead 4-3 after three innings. WT put a man on base when Shields walked in the top of the fourth, but the other three hitters stuck out leaving him stranded. The Mustangs got one run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-3 lead.
The Comanches answered back with three runs in the top of the fifth to retake the lead 6-5. They held Claude scoreless in the bottom of the fifth to maintain their 6-5 edge. WT put up two more runs in the top of the sixth and the Mustangs got two for an 8-7 score after six innings. WT couldn't muster a score in the top of the seventh, and only held a slim one run lead 8-7, but Juarez fanned two hitters and the other was thrown out to preserve the win.
Big Ty Lay hit a 2 RBI double. Tyler Hoff had a double and and RBI. Chase Elliott had an RBI. Lay and Juarez were both hit by the opposing pitcher twice.
WT is 9-11 after the win over Claude and clinch the third position in the playoff picture. They won their final District game over Boys Ranch Monday evening 14-13, but it doesn't effect their finish in the District standings.View more articles in:
