Elsie Owens Pickard, 87, of Borger, died April 5, 2012.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2012, in Westlawn Memorial Park, with Pastor Les Sharp officiating. Arrangements are by Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors.
Elsie was born Aug. 15, 1924, in Roger Mills County, Okla., to Richard and Martha Hay. She moved to Borger in 1947 and was employed in the grocery business. Later, she and her husband, Joe Owens, owned the Mrs. Baird’s Thrift Store. After retirement, she lovingly volunteered for many years at the hospital.
Her hobbies were working on crossword puzzles, playing “84” domino games with friends, and she enjoyed baking sweets for others to enjoy.
Elsie was a special and caring person who always had a smile on her face, even during the years she struggled with Alzheimer’s. She was a Christian and a longtime member of First Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by husband Joe Owens and Troy Pickard; two brothers, Roy and Henry Hay; and two sisters, Lena Leddy and Helen Minor.
Survivors include her daughter, Carol Petty, and husband Mike of Houston; two grandchildren, Craig Petty of Phoenix, Ariz., and Cheryl Herdejurgen and husband Russell of Houston; and two great-grandchildren, Jack and Rose Herdejurgen.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to St. Ann’s Nursing Home, P.O. Box 1179, Panhandle, TX 79068.
Visitation with the family will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday in the chapel at Minton Chatwell.
