Trips to the playoffs are becoming a normal thing for the Borger Lady Bulldogs soccer team. Despite being the smallest school in District 5-4A, the Lady Bulldogs are going to take part in the 4A girls soccer playoffs for the fifth year in a row when they take on the Brownwood Lady Lions on Monday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at Frenship High School in Wolforth.
The Lady Bulldogs have seeing some ups and downs throughout the 2012 season, which included opening district play with losses to Amarillo Palo Duro and Canyon along with a tie to Pampa. But the team found a way to end district play strong to claim the final district playoff berth and gain some momentum for the playoffs.
Lady Bulldog Head Coach Damion Simmons knows the team has come a long way on the field, saying, “They have all grown in their skill and abilities. We are doing well finding the back of the net right now and that is key, even more so we are playing very well together defending as a team.”
Two weeks have passed since the Lady Bulldogs concluded district play. However the team has found a way to stay sharp with games against Amarillo High and Amarillo Tascosa.
Simmons said he scheduled the games with the Amarillo schools to help prepare for the playoff-type atmosphere, with the coach saying, “This year I scheduled Tascosa and Amarillo High for the two weeks between Bi-District and Area, to prepare for the playoff game. We treated the games against Tascosa and Amarillo as playoff games. For us they were must wins. These games will prepare us and keep us game fit.” In the game against Tascosa, the Lady Bulldogs came away with a 3-1 win.
Due to byes in the Bi-District round, the Lady Bulldogs have been able to start post season play in the Area Round. However, the Lady Bulldog program is still looking for its first post-season win and is entering Monday with expectations for a breakthrough.
As far as what Simmons expects to see from Brownwood, the coach said, “They are a very good team. I know that they have some quality players and they play very physical. They work very hard as a team and never stop running.” Simmons added, “Going into the game on Monday we must play very physical and win the midfield. We have to outwork them in every position on the pitch.”
The winner of the Borger/Brownwood game will meet the winner of Amarillo Caprock/San Angelo Lake View.
