On Monday night, the Frank Phillips College Plainsmen opened their game with the New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI) Broncos building a 16-2 lead by the 15:10 mark. But shooting woes and losing the rebound battle, in the final 12 minutes of the first half, allowed NMMI to comeback to take the lead and force the Plainsmen to play catch up throughout the second half, as NMMI got the 99-88 win in WJCAC play.
After the 11:12 mark of the first half, the Plainsmen converted just two field goals the remainder of the first half. While the Plainsmen were cold, NMMI got hot from the outside by hitting five three pointers in the final eight minutes of the first half on their way to building a 33-48 lead at halftime.
The Plainsmen started the game on fire with Greg Nelson hitting a three pointer just five seconds into the game. The Plainsmen scored nine straight points before A.J. Peralta put NMMI on the scoreboard. Points by Ronald Scott, Taquan McDew, and Demetris Lafontant extended the Plainsmen lead to 16-2.
The momentum was fully in favor of the Plainsmen, but that quickly changed as the first half went along.
Tyler Gaskins helped lead the NMMI run by nailing three three-pointers in the final five minutes of the first half.
In the second half, the Plainsmen were able to regroup and pull back to within seven points, 52-59, by the 15:40 mark.
But NMMI responded by continuing to be hot from the outside and were able to extend their lead to 16 points, 63-79 with 7:20 to go in the game.
The Plainsmen put together one final charge led by McDew, Scott, and Rodshard Davis scoring 16 points in the final six minutes to pull the Plainsmen to within nine points, 78-87, with 3:00 to go.
In the final two minutes, the Plainsmen would resort to fouling to stay alive. NMMI would go 5/8 from the free throw line in the final minutes. But the Plainsmen would lose the rebound battle on missed free throws, allowing NMMI to stay in control of the game and get the win in Borger.
The Plainsmen drop to 2-9 in WJCAC play and 10-17 overall. NMMI improves to 3-8 in the WJCAC and 10-15 overall.
The Plainsmen have three games left in the 2011-12 season including a road trip on Thursday to New Mexico Junior College. The Plainsmen return to Borger on Monday, February 27th for the final home game of the season against Midland Junior College beginning at7:30 p.m..
