On Monday evening, the #2 South Plains College Texans got off to a fast start in their 101-78 win over the Frank Phillips College Plainsmen in WJCAC action at the BCAC.
The Texans entered Monday with a perfect 17-0 record and proved to be team that knows how to capitalize on their opponent’s turnovers and have the ability to shoot a high percentage from the floor.
The Plainsmen got off to solid start with Ronald Scott scoring five straight points, along with Akeem Johnson and Mike Evans putting points on the scoreboard to play to a 9-10 score by the 15:55 mark of the first half.
Unfortunately, the Texans caught on fire during the next seven minutes of the game, going on a 30-4 run to build a 13-40 lead.
During the run, the Texans were able to convert four Plainsmen turnovers into eight points and nail five three pointers to build the big lead. Texans sophomore Marshall Henderson had the hot hand on Monday connecting on five three pointers on the night on his way to scoring 22 points.
Before halftime, the Plainsmen were able to cut their deficit to 20 points and were eventually able to pull to within 15 points by the 15:40 mark of the second half.
Unfortunately, 15 points would be the closest the Plainsmen would get in closing the gap, as the Texans were able to pull away for the win.
The loss drops the Plainsmen to 0-3 in WJCAC play with the team scheduled to return to the court on Thursday evening against NMMI in Roswell, N.M.
