On Friday night, the Borger Bulldogs improved to 1-1 in District 1-3A play by knocking off their rival the Pampa Harvesters 50-45 in overtime at Tex Hanna Gym during “Pink Out” night.
The game had everything a fan on both sides of the gym could ask for in a rival game, including seven ties and seven lead changes, as both teams came out playing hard in order to crack the district win column.
Free throws and a three pointer by Pampa senior Latigo Collins gave Pampa the early 2-5 lead in the first period. But the Bulldogs answered with a 7-0 run led by senior Grant Boren scoring five straight to take a five point lead, 10-5, at the 2:50 mark.
Boren would have the hot hand for the Bulldogs on Friday evening, leading all scorers in the game with 18 points, which included nailing four three pointers.
Four straight points by Collins pulled the Harvesters to within a point going into the second period. But a three pointer by junior Kolter Newton proved to be the spark the Bulldogs needed to get their offense going as Boren, Jamon Hearon, Daniel Salinas, and Dillon Carrillo put points on the scoreboard to give Borger a 23-14 lead at the 3:00 mark of the second period.
The Harvesters finished the second period and started the third with a 9-0 run to tie the score at 23-23.
Newton would give Borger back a two point lead by going coast to coast for a lay up. But good outside shooting by senior Reid Miller helped Pampa end the third period with a two point lead, 29-31.
The next 12 minutes of the game had the feel of a good prize fight with the two teams going back and forth trying to give the other a knockout blow.
After Borger tied the game at 31-31, Pampa scored five straight. But the Bulldogs answered back with a jumper by Hearon and Boren hitting his second three pointer to make it a 36-36 score.
At the 2:20 mark of the fourth period, a great pass from Salinas set up Boren for an open three pointer to give Borger a 41-38 lead.
A Pampa miss and a rebound by Tyrell Haynes made it appear the Bulldogs were on their way to the win, as the team started to play stall ball in the final two minutes.
However a Bulldog turnover, set up Miller to nail a three pointer with 30 seconds left to make it a 41-41 and send the game into overtime.
The overtime period started with Cole Engle hitting a three pointer to give Pampa the lead. But 20 seconds later the Bulldogs tied the game on Boren’s fourth three pointer of the night.
Finally at the 2:15 mark of overtime, the Bulldogs took the lead in the game for good on a jumper by Boren, leaving the Borger defense to come up with key rebounds to secure the win down the stretch.
At one point this season the Harvesters were ranked in the top 25 in the state. But now Pampa finds themselves winless in District 1-3A play.
The Bulldogs improve to 10-12 overall for the season and will next host the Dalhart Golden Wolves, who are currently 1-1 in district play, on Tuesday evening, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
