On Monday night, the Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen could not overcome a slow start in their WJCAC opener to Odessa College losing to the Lady Wranglers, 82-51.
Both the Lady Plainsmen and Lady Wranglers opened the game struggling offensively. But eight turnovers and early foul trouble by the Lady Plainsmen, in the first five minutes, helped Odessa College build a 0-10 lead.
Kinjita Kelley finally got the Lady Plainsmen on the scoreboard, followed by Shardena Hudson putting up eight points in the first half. However, the Lady Wranglers used a 17-5 run to build a 24 point lead and set the tone for Odessa to go into halftime with a 22-42 lead.
The Lady Plainsmen tried to put together a second half rally when Jade Horhn nailed a three pointer and Shay O’Neal scored four straight points to give the Lady Plainsmen a 7-0 run. But the comeback was not meant to be as the Lady Wranglers regrouped and pulled away in the second half for the win.
The Lady Plainsmen drop to 5-11 overall and open conference play 0-1, while Odessa College improves to 12-5 overall and 1-0 in conference.
The Lady Plainsmen will next take on Western Texas College on Thursday evening in Snyder.
