Over the weekend, the Borger Bulldog and Lady Bulldog varsity soccer teams took part in the West Texas Invitational Tournament in Abilene.
On the boys side, the Bulldogs opened the tournament with a 3-1 loss to Abilene Cooper, then dropped two games on Saturday, 1-0 to Abilene Wylie and 4-0 to San Angelo Lake View.
Borger Head Soccer Coach Damion Simmons was overall pleased with the boys effort, saying, “Against Wylie, the boys gave everything they had in the gas tank for this match. We dominated the entire match and hit the wood work twice but gave up a goal. Every now and then you will have games like that when you are in complete control but one lucky goal the other way and you lose the match.”
In the game with Lake View, Simmons said the team played hard but didn't have much left in the gas tank after the Wylie game.
On the girls side, the Lady Bulldogs bounced back from a 3-0 loss to Abilene Cooper to get the come from behind win over San Angelo Lake View 3-2 in a shoot out after regulation.
The way the Lady Bulldogs battled back against Lake View impressed Simmons, who said, “This is the first time I saw the girls do what they are truly capable of doing. We went down two to zero the first half. Then we came out and tied it in the second half. We had a chance to win it in the last minute with a PK but it hit the wood work. We went into the Texas Shoot Out and won the game.”
Lady Bulldog goalkeeper Haley Ward came up big in the shoot out stopping four of five shots.
Marisol Terrazas had the first goal with Tabitha Vinyard giving the assist. The second goal was scored by Sammie Huckabee with the assist going to Allyson Burrows. During the shoot out the two girls that scored was Kaleen Dean, Julie Levario.
The Lady Bulldogs finished the tournament with a 4-0 loss to Stephenville.
