On Saturday afternoon, the Frank Phillips College Plainsmen men’s basketball team began the second half of the 2011-12 season hosting rival the Clarendon College Bulldogs at the BCAC.
The game went back and forth in the first half, but the second half belonged to the Plainsmen, who did a good job controlling both ends on the court as they pulled away for a 107-86 win.
The Plainsmen’s defense played a key role in the Bulldogs committing 19 turnovers. On the offensive end, the Plainsmen had six players scoring in double digits, led by freshman guard Ronald Scott scoring 19 points followed by Taquan McDew with 18 points.
The game started with the two teams matching points until back-to-back baskets by Greg Nelson and an old fashioned three point play by Scott gave the Plainsmen a 21-14 lead at the 13:36 mark of the first half.
The Bulldogs regrouped and eventually took a four point lead, 35-39 at around the nine minute mark of the first period.
But the Plainsmen ended the first half by turning up the intensity a notch on the defensive end, leading to a couple of easy scoring opportunities off of steals.
A three pointer by Earl Hill gave the Plainsmen a 53-44 lead before the Bulldogs closed the gap in order to go into halftime down by just six points, 56-50.
The Bulldogs converted a free throw just 30 seconds into the second half. However, the start of the second half belonged to the Plainsmen who went on a 15-3 run to build a 71-54 lead by the 17:00 mark.
Plainsmen 6-10 freshman post Alex Zivkovic took control around the paint, scoring eight of his 17 points in a four minute span which helped the Plainsmen build a 26-point lead at one point as they cruised the remainder of the half to the win.
The win improves the Plainsmen record to 7-8 overall for the season and the team will conclude its non-conference schedule tomorrow night hosting Lamar Community College (4-8) beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the BCAC.
The Plainsmen will try to get a little revenge after losing the first meeting between the two teams, 64-63, in early December in Colorado.
