Last Friday evening, the Sanford-Fritch Eagles were able to put their non-district woes behind them by opening District 1-2A Division II play with a 33-19 win over the Tulia Hornets.
Through the first half of the game, the Hornets managed to play tough before the Eagles were able to pull away for the two touchdown win.
The game proved that the road to another district title is going to be tough for the Eagles this season, as the district as a whole has improved on the football field compared to 2010.
Next up for the Eagles is a showdown with the Floydada Whirlwinds on Friday evening in Fritch.
The Whirlwinds enter Friday evening with a 2-3 overall record and coming off a heartbreaking 21-20 loss to Spearman in their district opener last week.
The Whirlwinds are talented at the skill positions led by senior running back Rex Mathis and juniors Jordan Woody at receiver and John Yannis at quarterback.
The Whirlwinds also have decent size on both the offensive and defensive lines led by 2010 All-District selection Joseph DeOchoa.
The Eagles had no problems winning last year’s meeting by a score of 32-7. However, high school football proves time and again that a lot can change over a year, so expect a good contest in Fritch on Friday evening.
Tomorrow’s kickoff between the Whirlwinds and Eagles is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Eagles Stadium in Fritch.
