DUMAS-On Friday night, the Borger Bulldogs were able to rack up 120 yards and a touchdown in the fourth quarter against the Dumas Demons. Unfortunately, offensive struggles in the first three quarters proved to be too much for Borger to over come, as the Demons were able to hang on for a 20-12 win over the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs managed just 81 yards of total offense through the third quarter with the Demons doing a good job shutting down the Bulldog running game and putting pressure on the quarterback. But despite the offensive struggles, the Bulldogs’ defense did a good job containing the Demon spread attack to just 209 yards of total offense that gave the Bulldogs a change for a potential comeback in the fourth quarter.
Early on, a 33 yard run by Demon quarterback Clayton Baker put the Demons inside the Bulldogs’ 30 yard line, in the first scoring drive of the game. Two passes from Baker to Andres Baskin placed the ball on the three yard line, setting up a short touchdown run by Alexio Phothisene to take a 0-7 score.
On the Bulldogs’ ensuing drive, Jacob Rendon connected with Max Lusk for a 11 yard pass. However, the Bulldogs could not get anything going and would be forced to punt. The Demons fumbled the punt to give the Bulldogs the ball inside the Demons’ 20 yard line. But two plays later the Bulldogs gave the ball right back on a fumble at the Demon four yard line.
The Bulldog defense made a great stand forcing the Demons to punt the ball inside their end zone. The Demon punter had trouble picking up the snap, setting up Dustin Clark to block the punt leading to senior Miles McKinney recovering the ball in the end zone to make it a 6-7 game.
The momentum quickly went back to the Demons as Baskins took the hand off, on a reverse punt, 78 yards for a touchdown to make it a 6-13 game at the 9:15 mark of the second quarter.
Throughout the rest of the second quarter and most of the third quarter, neither team could get anything going offensively.
Towards the end of the third quarter, the Demons caught a big break when the Bulldogs fumbled the ball on their own 28 yard line. A personal foul placed the ball on the 11 yard line and the Demons needed only two plays to get into the touchdown off a three yard run by Tanner Hallford.
Going into the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs’ offense finally woke up with the team going on a ten play scoring drive. The offense did a good job mixing up the run and pass with Rendon connecting with McKinney and Austin Young for 50 yards in the air to get inside the Demons’ 20 yard line. Rendon finally finished the drive with a one yard touchdown run to make a 12-20 score with 8:25 to go in the game.
The Demons responded by going on a six play drive that reached the Bulldogs 18 yard line. However, Young came up with an interception in the end zone to kill the Demon drive and give the Bulldogs a chance to go on a drive that could tie up the ball game.
The Bulldogs would go on a 13 play drive reaching the Demons’ 30 yards. But the comeback just wasn’t in the cards, as the Demons came up with an interception to end the Bulldog drive to hang on for the win.
The Demons improve to 3-0 on the season while the Bulldogs drop to 1-3.
Next up for the Bulldogs is a home game next Friday hosting the Graham Steers at 7:30 p.m..
