In the first two weeks of the season, the West Texas High Comanches have been one of the most dominant teams in the Texas Panhandle by outscoring their opponents 83-6.
In the win over Shamrock last Friday, the Comanches’ defense completely shut down the Irish by giving up only had two yards of total offense in the game.
West Texas High Head Coach Keith Hardin has been pleased with the defense, saying, “So far our play on that side of the ball has been outstanding. Our defense line has been dominant and that has allowed our linebackers to make plays.”
In talking about the defense, Hardin was quick to point out that the team’s success cannot be contributed to just one or two players, but to how all of the players on the unit have stepped up and contributed in making plays.
On how the early success has impacted the team, Hardin said, “Things are going good for us right now. However, we know we have to be more disciplined and continue to work hard doing what we do throughout the season.”
On Friday night, the Comanches will make the short drive to take on the White Deer Bucks.
The Bucks enter the game with a 0-2 record, but Hardin is quick to say their record is a little deceptive. On what he sees from White Deer, Hardin said, “White Deer is a lot better than the scores and their record indicate. The difference in their losses is they have given up some big plays that really hurt them. Our offense is one that doesn’t make a lot of big plays but is one that controls the clock and works its way down the field. So I expect their defense to be able to match up well against us.”
The Bucks have a couple of good playmakers led by seniors Graham Wilson, Zach Bradley and Brady Montgomery and the size that should provide a good match up for the Comanches.
When talking about the keys to a win, one of the things Hardin always mentions first is limiting turnovers and that is the case in the game with White Deer. Hardin said, “If we take care of the ball then we should be able to put ourselves in a good position to get a win in the fourth quarter.”
Kickoff between the Comanches and Bucks is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in White Deer.
