On Friday evening, the Sanford-Fritch Eagles travel north to take on the Stratford Elks looking for their first win of the 2011 season.
For the second year in a row, the Eagles find themselves in the middle of one of the toughest non-district schedules in the Texas Panhandle.
Last week in Sunray, the Eagles struggled in the second half in their 47-24 loss to the Bobcats.
The Eagles racked up 334 yards of offense and four touchdowns in the first half along with the first drive in the third quarter. But in the final 20 minutes of the game, the Eagles’ offense only managed to gain 64 yards, setting the tone for Sunray to score 21 unanswered points to pull away for the double digit win.
In the loss, Colton Valle rushed for 123 yards with one touchdown while Chris Bryan was 15 of 31 for 201 yards passing. Tate Murray had a good game offensively and defensively where he had three catches for 51 yards and six tackles including three for a loss of yards.
The Eagles will look to regroup against a Stratford team that has a 1-1 record after posting a second half comeback to get a 28-20 win over Friona last Friday night.
The Elks will use a good offensive line to open holes for their ground game led by a pair of juniors in running back Alex Chavoya, quarterback Tanner Wright and senior running back Justin Mungia.
Casey Lantelme, Anthony Lemus, and Victor Acevedo give the Elks three playmakers on the defensive side of the ball and lead the offensive line.
The Elks will provide a touch challenge for the Eagles. But if the team can cash in on their scoring opportunities and contain the Elks ground game, the Eagles should be able to put themselves in a good position to get a win in Stratford.
Kickoff between Sanford-Fritch and Stratford is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Stratford.
