Big changes are going into effect for drivers in the State of Texas.
As of September 1, 2011, existing 65 mile-per-hour night and truck speed limits will be bumped to 70 mph.
All signs with the night and truck speed limits should be removed by the end of this year and citizens are asked to abide by the posted limit of 70mph.
The 82nd Texas Legislature passed, and Governor Rick Perry signed, House Bill 1353 which will allow the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to set a 75 mph speed limit on any State highway found to be safe for such traffic. TxDOT will review the possibilities of a transition from a 70 mph to 75 mph speed limit.
This transition should be completed by 2013.
Carol Rawson, TxDOT Director of Traffic Operations, stated, “With these contracts in place, we are moving steadily ahead to implement these new laws. However, it is important to remember that any increases to speed limits are not effective until the new speed limit signs are actually installed.”
