A local veteran has been invited to receive a special honor in Washington, D.C.
Jimmie L. (Shorty) Albert, a veteran of World War II, has been invited to be a part of the Honor Flight this fall in Washington, D.C.
Albert’s wife Leola and his grandson Jake Heare have plans to go on the trip with him. Heare is interested in going to hear the stories of this historic event. However, the Texas Panhandle Honor Flight Society will only cover the costs of Shorty’s flight.
In order to help cover the costs for the trip, a special fundraising event is being held at the Elks Lodge in Borger this Saturday from 7-9 p.m. Admission is $8 at the door.
A dinner, dance, and silent auction will be held to help send the three to Washington, D.C.
Lorna Heare, who is the daughter of the Alberts, said the local merchants have shown great support for the cause and have donated a large variety of items.
“There is a candy basket from the Sugar Rush on Main Street in Borger, dinner for two at the Plaza, a basket of Scentsy products that include a warmer and other goodies, a one-night stay in the executive suite at the Hampton Inn and Suites, a certificate for services from Vernon and Sons, solar lights from Popular True Value Supply, a certificate for a meal at Tio Pancho’s in Fritch, a Yankee candle from Holmes Pharmacy, a custom pair of flip-flops from Angie, ponchos and coolers from Morton Lumber, a pizza and two buffets from Pizza Duo, a socket set from AutoZone, a certificate for services at MasterLube, [and] a meal for two at the Cracker Barrel,” Heare said. “And the list keeps growing!”
Entertainment will be provided by Ken “Cowboy” Lewing, and food will be provided by the friends of Shorty and Leola.
L. Heare said this is going to be a historic event for Shorty and Leola, a trip they will never forget, and encourages the public to make this party the event of the summer.
“We all know someone or have known someone in the military services,” she said. “Our World War II veterans are getting fewer and fewer by the day. Any military person who comes to this event in uniform will be admitted free and half price for their escort. Let’s come together as a community by simply saying, ‘Thank you for what our military has given for the freedom we enjoy.’”
