Work on the new Subway Restaurant is officially underway.
Frank Wingate, one of the operating partners of Subway in Borger, said ground was officially broken this past week at the corner of Opal and West Wilson, directly in front of the Holiday Inn Express.
Wingate said the new Subway will resemble the store in the Abilene area. The new location will have a drive-thru and will be a steel building with a bricked exterior.
He said under the terms of the building contract, the new Subway should be completed in December of this year.
However, he said he and wife Sherry along with Jeff and René Brain, all operating partners of the restaurant, hope to beat the contract timeline and see a much earlier opening.
The old location, which was housed in the older Cedar Lanes building, closed its doors on May 13 of this year to make way for a new CVS Pharmacy.
The Wingates and Brains said that while they loved the centralized location of the bowling alley, they did not like the building itself and the problems it created for employees and customers.
Other issues included cold weather conditions while the heater was repaired, bad handicap access, a leaky roof, and a parking lot filled with potholes.
With the old location closed and work on a new location underway, Wingate said he and his partners are enthusiastic about the future of Subway in Borger and ready to serve customers once again.
“We are excited to get back into business as soon as possible,” he said.
He said he encourages questions from the public and will keep citizens posted on the progress of the new Subway.
