On Friday, members of the Borger Bulldogs varsity and junior varsity football teams will take part in the first Wayland Baptist University-West Texas 7 on 7 Tournament.
The tournament will take place at Plainview’s Greg Sherwood Memorial Bulldog Stadium and the surrounding practice fields.
Thanks to more high school football teams using spread offenses, summer 7-on-7 Football has grown in Texas over the past couple of years, with teams from Borger participating in tournaments for the third year in a row.
The rules for 7-on-7 are basically that of a non-tackle football game that is played on just half the football field with two 20 minute continuous clock halves.
Offensively, plays must be all forward passes, and no kicking or punting with the 45 yard field marked in 15 yard intervals, giving teams the opportunity to gain three first downs before having to score a touchdown or turn the ball over on downs.
For the Wayland Baptist tournament, the Borger varsity team will compete in Pool B against Lubbock Cooper, Shallowater and Vernon. Borger’s first game will be against Lubbock Cooper on Friday at 9 a.m.
After pool play in the morning, the Borger varsity team will compete in tournament play in on Friday afternoon.
The Borger JV team will compete in the JV pool against Plainview, Clovis N.M., Amarillo Caprock and Sudan. The Borger JV will begin tournament play at 9 a.m. on Friday against Plainview.
Offical two-a-day workouts will begin for the Bulldog football players in about two weeks.
