The Hutchinson County Airport is preparing to have some special visitors.
Pilots in The 35th annual Air Race Classic will make a pit stop in Borger next week. Dennis O’Bryant, Airport Manager, said they are expected to come in on Wednesday, June 22, 2011. The race is from June 21-24.
There will be over 100 Female pilots and 50 air crafts this year competing for cash prizes and awards. The ARC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to encouraging and educating current and future women pilots, increasing public awareness of general aviation, demonstrating women’s roles in aviation, and presenting and promoting the tradition of pioneering women in aviation since 1997.
This year’s race will start in Iowa City Municipal Airport, Iowa City, Iowa, and will finish in Mobile Downtown Airport, Mobile, Ala. In between they will stop at the following airports: Brookings Regional Airport, Brookings, S.D., Jamestown Regional Airport, Jamestown, N.D., Black Hills-Ice Airport, Spearfish, S.D., Rawlins Municipal/Harvey Airport, Rawlins, Wyo., Alliance Municipal Airport, Alliance, Neb. , Great Bend Municipal Airport, Great Bend, Kan., Hutchinson County Airport, Borger, University of Oklahoma Westheimer Airport, Norman, Okla., and South Arkansas Regional at Goodwin Airport, El Dorado, Ark., making the total statue race distance 2722.01 miles.
O’Bryant said that the new terminal will have restrooms and air conditioning by that Tuesday Before the day they arrive. He also suspected that the racers will stay through the night in Borger and will leave that following morning to continue the race.
