AUSTIN-Good. But who knew this good?
Through the 1-3A District and 3A Region I Tennis Tournaments, the Borger Mixed Doubles team of senior Josh Madden and junior Abbie Madden has cruised through the brackets, only losing one set on the way.
With such a good streak, there were hopes for the brother and sister duo to make a good showing at the 3A State Tennis Tournament, but the showing they made on Monday was nothing short of being very impressive in dominating their competition.
While the slow moving tournament in Austin led to a delayed start for the Maddens on Monday afternoon, it didn’t take too long for them to earn a shot at the 3A Mixed Doubles State Title on Tuesday by winning their opening and semi-final matches in straight sets.
The Borger pair opened Monday afternoon taking on Dylon Cox and Kaitlyn Green of Kirbyville, with the Maddens’ cruising to the win 6-2, 6-3.
In the state semi-finals, the Maddens’ squared off with Eli Ramos and Erika Gilbert of La Feria, who needed three sets to win their opening match.
In the semi-finals, the Maddens’ had no problems in the first set winning 6-1 and hung on in set two for the 7-5 win.
For a moment, the state final appeared to potentially be a rematch of the District 1-3A title match as the Pampa duo of Aaron Silva and Holly Gage went to the third set in their semi-final match with Laird Beaty and Courtney Johnson of Lindale.
Unfortunately the Borger vs. Pampa rivalry will not have state title implications as Beaty and Johnson won the match, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, to advance to today’s final against Abbie and Josh Madden.
According to the UIL website, the state final match between Madden/Madden of Borger vs Beaty/Johnson of Lindale got underway at 9:00 a.m. this morning in Austin.
