PLAINVIEW- Any hope for the Borger Lady Bulldog Softball Team extending its 2011 season was quickly done away with on Saturday afternoon.
The Andrews Lady Mustangs scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning, setting the tone for the Lady Mustang 17-1 win in game two of the best-of-three series.
After winning game one on Friday evening, Andrews took the 3A Area Round playoff series two games to none to advance to the 3A Regional Quarterfinals this coming weekend against Lubbock Cooper.
A lead off home run sparked the big first inning with eight hits and three Lady Bulldog errors, leading to Andrews taking a 0-10 lead.
After Andrews added two runs in the second inning, the Lady Bulldogs tried to get a rally going in the bottom of the third inning with senior Joanne Jones hitting a double and Alex Lopez reaching base on a Andrews error.
Two batters later, sophomore Desiree Jiminez connected for a RBI single to make it a 1-12 score. Unfortunately, the one run would be all the Lady Bulldogs would get across home plate with Andrews converting a 4-3 double play to get off the field in the third inning.
Before all was said and done, Andrews scored five more runs, leading to the game being called after five innings.
While there is no question losing the series is a big disappointment for the Lady Bulldogs, the team has plenty to be proud of in the manner it improved from just six wins in 2010 to 19 wins and an Area Round playoff berth this season.
The Lady Bulldogs graduate six seniors, which will lead to several positions to be filled going into 2012. However, with a good nucleus and several solid young players coming up the pipe, the Lady Bulldogs softball program appears to have a bright future moving forward.
