LUBBOCK-In the program’s first-ever appearance in the NJCAA Region V West Softball Tournament on Thursday, the Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen struggled to get much going at the plate in their 7-1 loss to the Howard College Lady Red Hawks.
The Lady Plainsmen managed just two hits through seven innings, while the Lady Red Hawks used big third and fourth innings to score five runs to pull away for the win.
The Lady Red Hawks took a 0-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Olive Naotala brought in Faith Koria from third base on a fielder’s choice to the shortstop.
In the top of the third inning, the Lady Plainsmen tied the game on a RBI fielder’s choice by Nikki Moreno brought in Sabrina Martinez, making the score 1-1.
However, the Lady Red Hawks regained the lead and didn’t look back in the bottom half of the inning.
After the Lady Plainsmen got the first out on a ground out, an error and a hit batter put two Howard College base runners on with one out.
Alexis Beltran would bring in two Lady Red Hawk runs on a RBI single opening the door for Howard to score three runs in the inning to take a 1-4 lead.
Through the final four innings, the Lady Plainsmen were able to manage to get one hit, a double by Kristi Michaud, making it hard for the team to rally late in the game.
Despite the loss, Lady Plainsmen sophomore Kiana Levy pitched a solid game by going six innings spreading out eight hits for five earned runs while striking out four and walking three batters.
Howard would ride the momentum from the win into the afternoon by defeating Midland College 5-4
The Lady Plainsmen played their second game of the regional tournament on Friday morning against El Paso Community College.
