Going into the weekend, the Frank Phillips College Lady Plainsmen found themselves needing to win their four-game series with Clarendon College in order to clinch a spot in the Region V Tournament for the first time in the program’s history.
In the first two games of the series on Friday in Clarendon, the Lady Plainsmen got off to a great start by taking both games on the road, 7-4 and 9-3.
The series changed venues on Saturday, as the showcase of the official grand opening of the team’s new field at the Johnson Park complex took place, drawing a great crowd to take part in the festivities.
Fortunately, the fans were treated to a great afternoon of softball with Clarendon keeping their hopes alive by taking the first game on Saturday 12-11 in eight innings. However, the Lady Plainsmen sealed the deal in the final game of the series by coming away with the 11-8 win.
Frank Phillips College Head Softball Coach Jenneffer Kohler credits the milestone in the program to her players, saying, “I want to acknowledge all of the players that laid the groundwork for this program. This group has more guts and heart than I ever realized. Knowing the challenge going in to the weekend we had to take three of four games. They embraced it and ran with it.”
The Lady Plainsmen now turn their focus to the Region V West Tournament that will get underway starting on Thursday in Lubbock at Lubbock Christian University.
The Lady Plainsmen will open the tournament at noon on Thursday taking on Howard College.
The Lady Red Hawks took each of the meetings with Frank Phillips earlier this season but the post-season wipes the slate clean, with Kohler commenting, “Anything can happen in the tournament.”
