HEREFORD-Making their first playoff appearance in several years, there is no question that there had to be some concern to how nervous the Borger Lady Bulldogs were going to be as they opened the 3A playoffs against the Levelland Loboettes on Friday evening in Hereford.
Fortunately the Lady Bulldogs answered that question by playing a solid game offensively and defensively to leave the field with an 11-5 win and advance to the 3A Area round, where they will take on Andrews next weekend.
Freshman Taylor Hickman started the game strong in the pitcher’s circle by limiting Levelland to just one run on five hits through the first four innings of play.
Levelland pitcher Lexi Bullard started the game strong by getting out of the top of the first inning on a pop up and two quick ground outs to second base. However the Lady Bulldogs started to figure out the Loboette pitcher in the second inning with Kylie Boyd and Alex Lopez reaching base on back to back singles.
Levelland regrouped to get out of the inning but not before Lauren Hernandez brought in Boyd on a sacrifice fly to give Borger a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the third inning, the Lady Bulldogs started to break the game open by scoring five runs to take a 6-0 lead.
Lyndsey Barrow opened the inning with a single followed by two Levelland errors that loaded the bases for the Lady Bulldogs
A walk would make the score 2-0 before Brittany Thomas connected for a three RBI triple and Hernandez connected for her second RBI of the game to give the 6-0 score.
The Borger bats continued to connect at the plate by adding four more runs in the fourth inning, including a two RBI double by Thomas to build a 10-1 lead.
Starting in the fifth inning, Levelland finally started to have a little success at the plate by hitting a two run homerun and a two run triple in the sixth inning to keep Borger from being able to get a run-rule win.
However the Lady Bulldogs defense did a good job on the field to get the outs they needed in the final innings. Along with senior Traysha Walker coming in and doing a good job pitching the final inning to seal the win for the Lady Bulldogs.
The win improves Borger’s season record to 18-17 overall.
The site and times for the Area round playoff with Andrews was not known as of Saturday morning.
