West Texas High came into Follett Friday afternoon to face an unbeaten 10-0 Panther baseball team. The Comanches trailed once, 1-0, after the first inning. Follett fought back in the bottom of the seventh and had the winning run at first base, when Ty Lay fanned the hitter to end the game with a 15-14 win. The win keeps the Tribe in second place behind Follett. WT needs some help from someone else in the District to beat Follett to give them any chance at the District Crown.
Follett scored with two outs in the first and led 1-0. WT High got the bats working in the second and scored five runs. Alex Ramirez hit a double to left field to score two runs. A couple of Comanche errors kept the Panthers close as they closed the score to 5-4 after two.
Logan Hoff’s two-RBI double in the third gave WT a little breathing room, but Follett battled back with two runs of their own. The Tribe still held on to the lead, 7-6 ,after the third. Two RBIs off the bat of Robert Sale made the score 9-6. The Panthers got a base runner from a triple with one out. That run scored but WT ended the inning when Carlos Juarez on the mound threw to Kyle Stroud at third, to pick the runner off the bag. WT led 9-7 after four.
Stroud and Juarez drove in runs for the Comanches in the top of the fifth to give them a little 12-5 cushion. Follett answered back with three-run homer. The Tribe was still holding onto the lead, 12-10, at the end of the fifth. The first two WT hitters struck out, but then got a double from Jeremy O’Gorman and a base hit by Hoff to score two. This time the Panthers added only one run thanks to a double play that ended the inning. The score was 14-11 Tribe after six.
Juarez hit a solo home run to lead off the top of the second. With two outs, the Panthers scored three unearned runs after two hit batters and a base on balls loaded the bases. Follett scored three unearned runs to close to within one, 15-14. They had the winning run on first base when Lay struck out the hitter to end the game.
Juarez started on the mound and went for five innings and allowed six earned runs. Ramirez pitched the sixth inning and allowed one unearned run. Lay came in to close the seventh and had 3 strikeouts, hit two batters, and walked two (one intentionally). Three unearned runs scored.
Big Ty Lay had a strange day at the plate. He was hit three times by the Follett pitchers, hit a double, and got an RBI. Stroud went 3-5 and had 3 RBIs. Hoff was 3-5 and had a double and two RB’s. O’Gorman had a double and an RBI. Juarez had the big home run with an RBI. Ramirez hit a double and had two RBIs and Robert Sale got two RBIs.
The Comanches should face Boys Ranch there on Monday.
