One thing we have learned in high school sports this school year is when there is a rematch between district foes in post-season play, the outcome of the rematch can have some surprising results. Just ask the Pampa volleyball team and the Borger boys golf team.
So when the Borger brother and sister duo of Josh and Abbie Madden took to the court Thursday morning to take on Pampa’s Aaron Silva and Holly Gage for the 3A Region I Mixed Doubles title, nothing could be taken for granted, even though the Maddens had beaten the Pampa duo in straight sets for the District 1-3A title.
The Maddens had reached the final, being the #1 seed in the region, by defeating teams from Midland Greenwood and Alvarado in straight sets in the first two rounds.
However in the semifinals, the Borger duo found themselves in a classic match that was the highlight of the tournament for many of the coaches, against the Abilene Wylie duo of Rahil Patel and Katy Ueckert.
The semifinal match lasted three hours, with the Maddens’ losing the first set 4-6 before coming back to win the next two ,7-5, 7-5.
With such a tough semifinal, a question of how much the Maddens would have in the tank for the final had to come into play.
Fortunately, the Maddens rose to the occasion to keep the Pampa duo from leaving the regional tournament with the upset by winning the title match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, to earn a trip to the 3A State Tennis Tournament for the second year in a row.
The state tournament will take place on May 9-10 at the World of Tennis at Lakeway.
