Wednesday’s first round of the 3A Region I Golf Tournament got underway in less than ideal conditions at Meadowbrook Golf Course in Lubbock, leaving several players and coaches a little upset with the condition of the course.
Despite the poor conditions, the Borger Bulldogs made the most of the first round by shooting a team score of 319 to put them five strokes ahead of second place Andrews, 324.
Tyler Sosebee shot the high score for Borger on Wednesday, with a 77, to put him tied for sixth place, while Will Paulsell shot a 78 to place him tied for eighth.
Due to an illness within the team, Billy Haynes stepped in as the team’s fifth golfer and fired an impressive 81 for the first round.
Borger Head Golf Coach Clinton Grange was pleased with his team’s performance on Wednesday but understands a lot of work will need to be done today, saying, “I’m pleased with the team’s first round play. The greens are difficult to putt because of the the poor course condition, and it’s difficult for all the players to get a consistent feel. At this point it’s who has the toughest mental game, and so far, the Dogs are on top--I’m proud of the boys!”
Senior Hunter Wade of Perryton holds the individual lead shooting a first round 71.
