After too many close games of coming out on the losing end the past couple of years, the Borger Bulldogs snapped a losing streak to Perryton Rangers that dated back to 2007 by continuing to flex their muscles in hitting four homeruns on their way to a 11-5 win at Huber Park on Tuesday evening.
To say the Bulldog bats have been hot lately could be considered an understatement as the team has sent 13 balls over the fence in their past three district contests.
The top homerun count is held by senior catcher Brandon Garcia, who followed his three homer performance on Saturday and was named Amarillo Globe News Male Athlete of the Week on Tuesday.
He hit another homer in the first inning last night to take his season homer total to 10.
Perryton opened the first inning being aggressive on the base path. However, heads-up defense by the Bulldogs caused the Rangers to pay for that aggressiveness in throwing out a runner at third base and catching a run in a rundown between second and third base.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 5-0 lead by the second inning with two RBI homeruns by Garcia and junior Max Lusk and a sacrifice fly by Hunter Hertel.
On the mound, Hertel got the start for the Bulldogs, where he did a solid job in going the whole distance scattering nine hits and five earned runs over seven innings
Perryton pulled back to within three runs by the top of the fourth inning.
However, Borger responded in a big way in the bottom of the fourth with Lusk hitting his second two-run shot of the game followed by an RBI double by Zach McDonald to make the score 8-2.
McDonald helped the Bulldogs cap off the big district win by joining the homerun club with a two run shot in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it a 11-4 game.
The win takes Borger to 13-10-1 overall for the season but more importantly the team now sits alone in first place in District 1-3A with a 4-1 mark.
The Rangers drop back to a tie with Pampa for second place with the two clubs holding 3-2 marks.
Borger will now try to keep their hot hitting going on Saturday when they welcome the Pampa Harvesters to Huber Park with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
