DALHART-While people across the Texas Panhandle were hanging on to their belongings to keep them from blowing away in the high winds, the Borger Lady Bulldogs found a way to hang on and fight for a 14-12 win over the Dalhart Lady Wolves on Saturday afternoon to improve to 2-3 in District 1-3A play and 17-15 overall for the season.
The Lady Bulldogs jumped out on top early and appeared to potentially be on their way to getting a run-rule win with a 12-3 lead. However, an eight run sixth inning by Dalhart forced Borger to find a way to kill the Lady Wolves’ momentum and grind out the two run district win.
Borger got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning with Alex Lopez bringing in Lexi Fleming on a fielder’s choice to first base to make it a 1-0 game.
Dalhart tied the game in the bottom half of the inning.
However, it didn’t take long for Borger to reclaim the lead when Joanne Jones decided to hit a snow cone truck just over the left-field fence for a homerun to give the Lady Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Lady Wolves appeared to be on the verge of putting several runs on the scoreboard by loading the bases twice. However the Lady Bulldog defense did a great job of getting off the field without giving up a run with a 9-2-3 double play and a strikeout by freshman pitcher Taylor Hickman.
In the third and fifth innings, the Lady Bulldogs started to break open the game by scoring 12 runs that included a two-run homerun by Traysha Walker and three RBI single by Lyndsey Barrow.
Despite being down 12-3, the Lady Wolves continued to fight hard and were able to take advantage of a couple of Lady Bulldog errors and good base hits to score eight runs to pull back to within one run, 12-11, going into the seventh inning.
Fortunately the Lady Bulldogs answered back to Dalhart with Barrow hitting a triple before being brought in on a RBI triple by Fleming, followed by Lopez bringing Fleming across home plate again to give Borger a 14-11 lead.
Dalhart scored one run in the bottom of the seventh, but two heads up plays at shortstop by Barrow and a pop up to Hickman allowed the Lady Bulldogs hang on for the win.
The Lady Bulldogs will next host Perryton tomorrow evening at Agnes Howe Park starting at 5:00 p.m.
Perryton comes into tomorrow’s contest with a 1-4 district record, after falling to Pampa 24-18 on Saturday.
