The West Texas Comanches went into Claude this past Saturday tied with them for second place with a 3-1 District record.
Both teams had losses to Follett, who leads the District. The Comanches got off to an early lead, and had to fight to hold on to it. They got the job done though and came away with a 13-9 win. Now they are alone in second place, ready to knock off Follett when they meet again.
Jeremy O’Gorman had a big day at the plate, going 2-4 with a triple in the first inning, and in the second he legged out a hit to center field into a double when he did a great job of sliding under the tag at second base. Robert Sale did a nice job for the Tribe, also going 3-4. The most important hit of the day from him came in the top of the seventh when he hit a base hit to center for 2 RBIs. The two runs extended the Tribe’s lead from two runs to four going into the bottom.
Big Ty Lay also had a huge hit in the top of the seventh with a triple to left field. He was 2-4. Terrence Bonds was 2-4. Kyle Stroud had an RBI.
Carlos Juarez pitched six and a half innings and had five strike outs. Logan Hoff closed the game with half an inning. He didn’t have any strikeouts, but all two out of the last three outs were pop ups.
The Tribe wasted no time by jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. The Mustangs answered with one run in the bottom of the inning. The Comanches ended the inning on a double play grounded to short to second over to first base. They had command of the game until the top of the fifth when they made several fielding errors and allowed Claude five runs as they closed to within one run, 10-9.
They did a great job of holding it together in a hostile environment and came away with a very important win.
The team is now 11-5 on the year and 4-1 in District play. Their next game is Monday in Stinnett when they host Booker.
