Tomorrow the District 1-3A Tennis Tournament will get underway here in Borger with the JV matches expected to start at around 9 a.m. followed by the varsity matches getting underway around 10 a.m.
The finals are expected to start around 3-5 p.m., according to Borger Head Tennis Coach Jeff Pinkerton.
The Borger tennis team goes into the district tournament with plenty of momentum after performing well in their last three tournaments, as well as posting wins against the top players from Perryton so far this school year.
However, Pinkerton knows his players will need to play well especially against Pampa, whom Pinkerton said Borger has yet to go head-to-head with this spring.
Borger will have plenty of favorites in tomorrow’s tournament starting with the mixed doubles pair of Josh and Abbie Madden, who are the returning district champions and were state qualifiers last year.
Elaine Myers is the number one seed in girls singles, where she is the defending district champion. Ariel Sanders is a player to watch in that division with Pinkerton saying if she can continue to play as well as she did in Amarillo this past weekend, then she has a good shot at earning a trip to regionals.
Borger will hold the number one and two seeds in girls doubles with the teams of Clara Saenz/Lindsey Murley and DeAnne Myers/Cassandra Fonseca.
In boys singles, Borger senior John Scott will enter the tournament as the number two seed while the boys doubles competition is expected to be a tough battle for the two regional qualifying spots including the Borger teams of David Buchannan/Cameron DeRouen and Alix Whitworth/Oliver Holmes expected to be in the hunt for those spots.
